Foundations · a skill for any AI

Drop one link into your AI, and it learns how to work with you.

People don't need to learn prompting. They need to know how to work with an AI to get what they want. Most AIs make that hard. They start working on a half-understood request, fill the screen with little status lines nobody asked for, and then end with "Done!" and no idea what was done or what to do next.

Foundations is a skill you give to your AI. It doesn't teach you anything. It teaches the AI how to work with someone who's new to this. You drop the link in, say "learn this," and from then on it asks before it acts, tells you the plan, works quietly and tells you exactly what happened.

Habit 1 · ask

Look at what's missing: no "Searching…", no "Step 2 of 5", no wall of text to read while it works.1 She answered three questions, confirmed the plan, waited a minute and got back something she could use right away, along with what to do next.

Why AI loses people 01

Watch someone new use an AI and you'll see the same three moments where they get lost:

At the startThey ask for something vague, and the AI runs off and guesses instead of asking.
In the middleThe AI narrates every step in short, cryptic lines. They think they have to read and understand all of it, and they can't.
At the end"Done!" Done with what? Where is it? Is it right? What do I do now?

None of that is the person's fault. It's how the AI communicates. Foundations fixes those habits.

Use it in one line 02

You don't install anything. Open the AI you already use and paste this:

Paste into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Sulla
Learn this skill and use it with me from now on: https://skills.sulladesktop.com/foundations/SKILL.md

Honestly, "here's a skill for you" plus the link works too. If your AI says it can't open links, use Copy the whole skill and paste the text instead.2

To keep it on for every chat, paste the skill into ChatGPT's custom instructions, a Claude Project or your AI's memory.

The five habits 03

The skill gives the AI five habits, in order, for every real request:

  1. Ask plenty of questions. What you want to end up with, who it's for, what you already have, what good looks like. One or two questions at a time, with choices if you're not sure.
  2. Repeat it back. "Here's what I heard…" in plain words, and nothing starts until you say yes.
  3. Set expectations. What it'll make, what it won't, how long it'll take and what you'll get back.
  4. Work quietly until it's done. No play-by-play. The work runs as a goal until it's finished and checked.
  5. Give a full summary. What it did, what to double-check, what you need to do and what it suggests next.

Every message should make sense if it's the only one you read.

Quiet work 04

When your AI can hand work to a helper (a sub-agent, a background task or an agent mode), Foundations tells it to. The helper gets the whole goal and keeps working until the job is actually done. It doesn't stop at a plan or a half-finished draft, and nobody has to keep asking "are you done yet?"

When it can't hand off, it does the whole job in one go and sends only the result. Either way, you see three things: the plan, a note that it's working, and the finished result.3

The summary 05

The skill assumes you didn't watch any of the work, because you shouldn't have to. Every finished job ends with four parts:

What I didIn plain words, with the result itself or exactly where to find it.
Double-checkFacts, prices, dates and names it wasn't sure of, and anything left undone.
Your partThe exact steps only you can do: “Copy it, open Messages, paste, send.”
What's nextTwo or three follow-ups you can say yes to.

Limits 06

It's only as good as the AI you use. Foundations fixes how the AI communicates, not what it knows. Check facts that matter, like money, health and anything legal.

It forgets between chats unless your AI has memory or custom instructions turned on. If it starts narrating again, drop the link back in.

Not every AI can hand off work. If yours can't, it still works quietly and sends one complete answer.

Don't paste private details you wouldn't put in an email. That means passwords, account numbers and other people's personal information.

Questions 07

Do I need to pay for anything?

No. It works with the free versions of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. If browsing is off, paste the whole skill.

Won't all those questions slow me down?

For quick questions it asks few or none. For real work, two minutes of questions saves you from three rounds of "no, that's not what I meant."

I'm teaching a group. Can I share it?

Yes. Send them this page, or just the one line above.

Can I change the skill?

Yes. It's a plain text file. Copy it and edit it.
